Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body controls blood sugar. In effect it is a lifestyle condition that, in the case of type 1 diabetes, can be dealt with and lightened through diet, exercise and sleep. Eating with diabetes can be simple or complex. It depends on what you make it.
The American Diabetes Association or ADA has certain suggestions for eating with the disease. The diet includes specific amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, dairies, vegetables and fruits. It is also suggested by the ADA that you reduce your intake of processed foods and fats .
What you eat is really up to you and it is your right and responsibility to decide what to feed your body and how to take care of it. You are the only one that can make the decision to eat healthy foods. Many people can influence that decision but no one can make the decision for you, not even your doctor.
The sad thing is, because we have the “free will†to do as we please with our bodies we also have consequences that we have to deal with if we make bad choices. The food we eat, the air we breathe, our bad habits (smoking or drinking), they all can affect the health of our bodies. If we do not take care of our bodies we have to pay the price.
Diabetes type two is also a lifestyle disease. In many cases it is the result of not taking good care of your body and having bad genes. It seems unfair that some people can eat all they want, gain all the weight they want and not exercise but still not suffer the consequences of diabetes. That is where genetics comes in.
It seems that people are the products of genetics and the environment. Eating bad foods will affect anyone who does so, the only difference is that some people will see a quicker consequence from the bad food than another person. Those that have strong genetics will be able to hold off the affects of the bad foods ingested into the body.
Having a diabetes diet is really no different than having a well balanced and nutritional diet. Therefore, a diabetes diet should be no different than your everyday healthy diet. Having a well balanced and nutritional diet before you get the disease is a good way to help prevent the disease.
In some cases, switching to a diabetes friendly diet can mean a lot of work for the one who has the disease. Therefore eating with diabetes is as complicated as you make it. You have to give your body the nutrients it needs to stay or become healthy.
