There are postpartum depression groups that center on women who suffer from this condition. They talk with others who understand what they are experiencing. Individual therapy is helpful as well when trying to learn new coping strategies.
Limited research suggests that anti-depressants may help in reverting the chemicals of the body to a more stable and normal condition. However, these drugs do pass through breast milk from the mother to the child; therefore, it is best to consult with your obstetrician and psychiatrist before beginning any type of medication.
When you breastfeed, and will be taking medications for a short period, say for instance six weeks, you can always pump for those six weeks to maintain your milk supply, while throwing out any milk you pump, until you finish with taking the medication and the baby is able to nurse once more.
Your body needs rest to recover, although you may not be able to sleep, you should try to rest, since this is helpful. Try to take a nap while the baby is sleeping.
Keep in mind that life is not perfect and never will be. Take the pressure off yourself by trying to accomplish everything while trying to make it perfect. Simply do what you are able to do and leave the rest for a later time. It is not going anywhere and will be there waiting your return.
When you need help with household duties, you can ask your spouse, children or family. Try to find someone who can help you out around the house for part of the day. Family and friends can help with meal preparations.
Many times a woman will go without help, simply because they do not ask for help. Consider wearing the other shoe, you would be more than happy to help with meals and a few household duties to help your loved ones, right. You simply have to let the others know you do need their help.
In the next post I’ll continue this discussion of how and where to get help for postpartum depression.
