My grandfather was about 85 when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He lived another eight years, the last few at a nursing home in his small town where he got excellent care. It was awful watching him lose his ability to take care of himself. He had always been independent, working his farm until he was in his 60s, and then keeping active into his early 80s.

Choosing professional help is a difficult decision to be made by the patient’s loved ones. but continuing home care will not change the progress of the disease, and will almost certainly have a deleterious effect on the caregiver at this point. My aunt cared for her husband at home for over 20 years until his death. Hospice wasn’t available at that time in her area, or I’m sure she would have been glad for the help.
